From November 1, 2021, a Director ID is now required for all company directors in Australia. A Director ID is a unique 15-digit number that will stay with a company director for their lifetime. You must apply for a Director ID if you are a director or will become a director of any of the following:

  • company
  • corporate Trustee of a trust and Self-Managed Superannuation Fund
  • registered Australian Body
  • registered foreign company

When you must apply for your Director ID depends on the date on which you will or have become a director:

  • individuals who became a director on or before 31 October 2021 – must apply by 30 November 2022,
  • individuals who become a director between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 – must apply within 28 days of appointment,
  • individuals who become a director from 5 April 2022 onwards – must apply before appointment.

To apply, the director is required to setup their myGovID and use myGovID app (available from App Store and Google Play) to start the application process. Directors will need a myGovID with a standard or strong identity strength to apply for their Director ID online.
